KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A 16-year-old has been arrested and charged for shooting at a school bus.

Court documents said the boy was identified by witnesses. He was detained by school officials Thursday and a juvenile prosecutor charged him with attempted assault and armed criminal action.

The bus, filled with students, was headed to Ruskin Heights when someone started shooting Wednesday.

"This is an epidemic and it's getting worse and worse every day," Carolyn Allen said.

For Allen, news of someone firing at a school bus in her south Kansas City neighborhood did not sit well.

"This scares me. This is right close to home. My grandkids play out here, my 5-year-old, my 3-year-old, they play on the jungle gym over there," she said.

Officers were dispatched to 93rd Street and Cleveland Avenue just before 7 a.m. Wednesday after reports of sounds of shots fired in the area.

Investigators said the young man tried to board the bus saying he needed a ride, even offering the driver of the Hickman Mills School District bus $20. When the driver didn't recognize him and he couldn't provide a student ID, the young man was told to get off. That's when witnesses on the ground said he pulled a gun and fired several shots - none of them hit the bus.

"We're just thankful the driver followed protocol and asked him to get off," said John Baccala with the Hickman Mills School District.

Kansas City Police spent a good part of the morning interviewing the driver and collecting evidence in a case that's once again bringing gun control to the forefront of parents' minds.

"Something has to be done about this. Stricter gun laws? Ok, but they need to be strict enough that you can't purchase a gun unless you have a reason for having it," Allen said.

Police found multiple shell casings near the intersection just west of Interstate 49, but believe the casings may have been left over from a shots-fired call Tuesday night.

The teen could face more charges. As of Friday, he was in juvenile hall.
