SHAWNEE, KS (KCTV) -

No injuries were reported following a fire in an apartment in Shawnee early Wednesday morning.

The fire started shortly after 5:30 a.m. at the Thomasbrook Apartments located in the 7600 block of Flint Street, which is just south of West 75th Street and west of Nieman Road.

Smoke was seen from the apartment when firefighters arrived on the scene.

The fire department said both the apartment's smoke detector and the apartment building's smoke alarm worked. Everyone managed to evacuate safely.

The fire was contained to one apartment, and only that apartment was damaged. It was called under control about 20 minutes later.

The Overland Park and Merriam fire departments assisted on the call.

The cause of the fire is not official, but firefighters believe careless smoking may be the cause.
