One minor in custody after hoax involving threat to schools

Posted: Updated:
KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

All schools in the Turner School District were temporarily under heightened security Tuesday after police told them a threat had been made.

Now, Kansas City, KS, police said they have a minor in custody in connection with the hoax and the case will now be reviewed by a district attorney who focuses on juvenile cases.

What first started as a concerned citizen calling KCTV5 news to say that Oak Grove Elementary was on lockdown turned into heightened alert for all schools in the area.

The superintendent for the Turner School District said Kansas City, KS, police stopped by the school district offices about 11:45 a.m. and warned that a threat had been phoned in and to be extra vigilant. The officers did not expand on what the threat said, where it was called into or when it was made.

While no schools were put on lockdown, the superintendent said Oak Grove and all schools in Kansas City, KS, were on heightened alert. The public information officer for Kansas City, KS, schools later said their schools were never on heightened alert and they only went around and used the threat as a reminder to KCK schools security about their normal procedures.

About 2 p.m. the public information officer for KCK schools said the threat was investigated and security personnel said all schools were "OK" and they are confident nobody was in any danger.
