Police: Road rage incident may have sparked shooting in Overland Park

Posted: Updated:

If anyone travels during rush hour in Overland Park, they know Metcalf Avenue is always busy, but what they don't expect is gunfire.

It was rush hour, Overland Park police say, about 7:30 a.m. Monday when two men got into a fit of road rage near 91st Street and Metcalf Avenue, a fit witnesses say included speeding up, slowing down and cutting each other off for 12 blocks.

It ended when one of them pulled a gun, firing at least five times, hitting not only the other driver's car but a car at a nearby dealership.

"Once upon a time, all you did was cut somebody off, flip em off, they'd laugh and everybody went on their way," Linda Sands said.

But Sands and her sister, Mary Beth Sands, say it has gone too far.

"I think enough is enough.  We've got to do something.  Everybody's got a gun, and that's how we solve things now ... pull out your piece and shoot," Linda Sands said.

"Every time you turn on the TV, the lead story is always somebody has been caught in the crossfire and shot.  It's too much," Mary Beth Sands said.

Overland Park police spent a good part of the day interviewing several witnesses and scouring nearby surveillance and traffic cameras.

Investigators say they are not giving up on finding the dangerous driver.

"I mean, I can understand frustration on the road but you know that's just crazy," Travis Canaday said.

Police are looking for extra witnesses, and say the man they're looking for was driving a black two-door passenger car, possibly a Mercury Cougar.
