An Olathe police officer fatally shot a man outside a Dollar General store Friday night.
Authorities initially said a second person was seriously injured after being shot, but later said there wasn't a second victim.
The shooting happened about 8 p.m. Friday at the store located at 112 N. Clairborne Rd.
KCTV5's Betsy Webster saw the person killed lying on the ground parallel to the front door. Webster said the deceased man who appeared to be in his 20s was right in front of the door.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting are odd, with no apparent motive at this time for the now-deceased gunman's actions.
It started with a call at 7:45 p.m. from a driver on Sante Fe Street about a man driving the wrong way in traffic.
When the responding officer got to that area, by the Interstate 35 ramp, the vehicle was gone, but the officer saw evidence of a collision and followed the trail of debris to the Dollar General.
"It appears the tire possibly hit the median, which blew the tire out and possibly gouged marks in the concrete that lead the officer to this area and then I think he found the vehicle in the parking lot," Sgt. Grant Allen with the Olathe Police Department said.
He says the officer made it just inside the door when he was confronted by 21-year-old Cody M. Kincheloe, pointing a gun at him, so the officer fired and killed Kincheloe.
There was a woman in the passenger seat of the car, also in her 20s. Police interviewed her and witnesses inside the store.
That officer has been on the job in Olathe for five to six years, according to the spokesman, and has previous experience elsewhere. He is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The officer-involved shooting investigation team has been activated. It is a multi-jurisdictional team that will not include anyone from the Olathe Police Department.
