Robber victim dies nearly 3 months later from head injury

ATCHISON, KS (KCTV) -

A routine kindness to a stranger cost Rusty Folsom his life, his family and police say.

In late October, Folsom was home when he heard a knock on his door.

Police say Charles Paradise, 23, was at the door, saying he had car trouble. Paradise asked to use the phone and warm up.

Folsom was a good-hearted man who gave the aid.

"He probably would have gone out and tried to help fix their car," Folsom's daughter, Michelle Pickman, said Friday.

But police say Paradise then committed a brazen act.

"When that suspect entered the victim's front door, he immediately began beating him, knocking him to the floor, and then grabbed his wallet and ran into the darkness," Atchison Chief Mike Wilson said.

Folsom suffered head injuries that proved to be fatal. He died Thursday from what doctors say was a slow bleed in his brain.

Because Paradise was a stranger to Folsom, it took more than two months to find the suspect, police said. The family believes Paradise learned that Folsom, 55, was disabled and targeted him, but they said his disability in no way contributed to his death.

They say that's entirely at the hands of Paradise. Prosecutors have already charged Paradise with aggravated robbery, burglary and battery. Once the autopsy reports are complete, the prosecutor will consider upgrading the charges.

The family is asking for upgraded charges.

"I just want whoever did this to have to deal with it every day for the rest of their lives," Pickman said.

In the meantime, they are remembering a tender-hearted man taken much too soon for a simple act of kindness. This includes focusing on Folsom's pet parrot, Chopper.

It mimics Folsom so Chopper sounds like him, and even laughs like him, family members said.

Few laughs in a family where there are too many tears.
