New store brings flavor of Mexico to Olathe

Posted: Updated:

Shoppers in Johnson County now have another option when they're looking to pick up some groceries - it's a store that offers some items you won't find elsewhere.

The grand opening ceremony was already under way Friday for Bonito Michoacan. The store's name means beautiful Michoacan, which is the city in Mexico where the owner grew up.

The mayor of Olathe, KS, and city leaders were at the grand opening to welcome the new business to the area that is bringing their authentic Mexican flavor to Johnson County.

Business is sizzling at Bonito Michoacan, located off Sante Fe Road in Olathe, where they grill and serve fresh soft tacos all day long.

"I'm eating a carne asada taco and it's great food, always fresh, it's very fast. We don't ever have to wait ever," Charles Craig said.

But that's not all people will find at Bonito Michoacan. Under one roof they have a grocery store with aisles of products from Mexico and South America. Their bakery makes pastries from scratch.

Craig lives down the road and said, since the business opened a few months ago, he's been coming in at least once a week.

"(They have) a great meat department. Very fresh. We buy all our chicken and steak. It's excellent," Craig said.

The owner, Armando Romero, left his hometown of Michoacan in 1985 in search of the American dream. He started working in the kitchen of a Chinese restaurant in Texas.

"I just worked as a dishwasher and a cook," he said.

Romero saved enough money to open the first Bonito Michoacan in Houston, TX. He now has five stores in Texas, another one in Kansas City, KS, and now the one in Olathe will be his seventh location.

In Spanish he said how he's managed to come so far.

"Hay muchos obstaculos en la vida pues todo se puede, con ganas y mucho esfuerzo se puede logar todo. Los suenos se pueden hacer realidad," he said.

Translated to English, he said there are many obstacles in life, but anything is possible if you have desire and a lot of hard work. Your dreams can become a reality.

Latinos in the area have become very familiar with his unique business and Romero hopes the English-speaking community will give him a chance too.
