To serve and protect is a motto that Overland Park Police Department Officer Derrick Hogan takes seriously.
But you might grab a hankie. Because the heartwarming story of how he helped a homebound elderly woman before the holidays could bring tears to your eyes and goes beyond normal dedicated service.
The 86-year-old woman couldn't drive because she was on new medication. Her son and another close relative who helped out recently died of cancer. That left just a niece to help out.
Officer Derrick Hogan was dispatched to the woman's home on Dec. 23. The woman needed help getting ahold of her church because she needed food.
"She was a very nice, sweet lady. Reminds you of your own grandmother," Hogan said.
But he didn't contact her church because with it being the holidays and a weekend he wasn't sure how long it would take for someone to get back with her. Instead, he told her to make a list of what she needed.
And list in hand, Hogan headed for the grocery store.
"It's just one of those things. It's the human thing to do," Hogan said. "I felt it would be nice."
He brought back to the woman her groceries plus a ham and poinsettia. And he refused her repeated attempts to pay him, instead accepting just her heartfelt gratitude.
The woman shared her heartwarming story about Hogan and word made its way via a letter to the chief of police. Hogan is now getting commendations from his boss.
Hogan shrugs it off, saying his fellow officers would have done the same thing and often do good deeds without any recognition.
"This makes this hard," he said. "This happens all the time and people don't see it. I don't feel like it should be me sitting here."
There's an elderly woman in Overland Park and her loved ones who would disagree.
