Community members left toys and balloons in front of the children's home
CONYERS, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Rockdale County Fire Chief Dan Morgan said it appears a 6-year-old playing with a lighter caused the fire that resulted in his four siblings being killed, and leaving his mother injured.
During a press conference, Morgan said the child will now work with the Division of Family and Children Services for fire safety counseling.
The community is now working to comfort a grieving mother.
Rashed Reynolds brought a big stuffed SpongeBob to the home on Pinedale Circle where four children he knew died in a house fire.
"It's just heartbreaking once you hear some news like that, especially if you from this area."
Reynolds remembers the children liked SpongeBob.
"When I came through the neighborhood, the ice cream truck was here and I saw the kids buy a Sponge Bob pop, so I brought a SpongeBob," said Reynolds.
The fire broke out late Tuesday night. The children's mother, Reeba Glass, tossed her 6-year-old son, Darnell Glass, out of a bedroom window. She did all she could to save her other children, but suffered burns over 40 percent of her body.
Investigators determined that there were no working smoke detectors in the house.
Her youngest, Deon Glass, was only 8 months, and her oldest and only daughter was 9. Glass, her mother and son Darnell survived.
"That is a blessing that she has one with her right now. The ones that are gone, best believe they are in everybody's prayers and they will never be forgotten," said Reynolds.
The official cause of the fire has not yet been determined and is still under investigation.
Charlotte Jones doesn't know the family but she can relate to their loss.
She added an angel to the memorial in front of the home.
Jones said the angel meant a lot to her when she had tragedies of her own.
"I had received this angel from a friend of mine that I used to work for. In 1994 I had several tragedies in my family. I had four family members passed away under different circumstances," said Jones. "I wanted to bring this to them - this angel - and let them know that the children are in a better place now."
The family's loved ones are also pulling together to help Glass get through the tragedy.
Glass is recovering at Grady Memorial Hospital after receiving second- and third-degree burns.
"She's really distraught," said her cousin, Xavier Shepherd.
"She's also starting to feel the physical pains as well," said Glass' pastor, Billie Cox of Macedonia Baptist Church. "So she's got two monumental things happening in her life right now."
Cox visited Glass in the hospital Thursday morning. She told CBS Atlanta News that she and Glass talked about the surviving child Darnell, who sustained a shoulder injury when Glass dropped him to safety from an second-floor window as the fire engulfed the family's home on Pinedale Circle. Cox said Darnell visited his mother in the hospital on Wednesday.
"That was a great time for her and for him, but it was also an emotional time because he does not understand that they're gone to heaven," said Cox. "He has no idea where heaven is."
Macedonia Baptist Church will be the location of the funeral service for the four children, which is planned for Jan. 19.
A representative with Levett & Sons Funeral Home in Conyers has offered to handle the funeral arrangements for the family at no cost.
Friends have set up the Glass Family Memorial Fund with Wells Fargo, Account No. 1009683226.
