Man threatens mass shooting at pharmacy to get drugs

OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

A man made off with a considerable amount of prescription drugs after he threatened to kill everyone inside an area Walgreens.

The man told the pharmacist that he would start shooting people if he didn't get the prescription drugs, including Oxycotin, that he wanted. The employees were scared that he was inside the store, but Overland Park police believe the man was outside watching through a store window.

The employee packed up several bottles of pills, including the potent painkiller, police said.

Overland Park Police Department Officer Gary Mason said the pharmacist was worried about the safety of those inside the store so he did the man's bidding.

Once the package was made available, the suspect dashed up to grab the package and then took off. Mason said it just shows the lengths that drug addicts will go to.

"People are getting aggressive and will do anything to get it," Mason said. "It's just another example of how quickly they can get a hold of it."

Detectives are working hard to solve this unusual crime, including reviewing surveillance video. That video has not been released.

The pharmacist is still shaken up.

"Very upset. Visibly shaken up when we got there and this is something that doesn't happen every day there," Mason said.

Walgreens officials said they are cooperating with police, but declined to say how many if any customers were inside the store at the time.
