Woman, 3 dogs die in Northland house fire

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Investigators are still trying to determine what sparked a blaze that killed a woman in a Northland fire.

Firefighters responded to the one-story home near Penguin Park in the 3900 block of Northeast 51st Terrace, just off Vivion Road, about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday after receiving reports that the house was on fire.

A passerby kicked down the front door of the house and went inside before he was overcome by smoke. John, a former firefighter who didn't want to give his last name, said he saw the smoke while driving on Vivion Road.

"The smoke was coming across the road and I could smell it wasn't the normal BBQ-type smoke," he said.

When he arrived, neighbors said they were fearful that the woman was home because her car was in the garage. So John jumped into action, knowing he had to do something.

"I just laid on my belly. I went as far as I could and the ceiling started to come down," he recalled. "And it was like, time to leave. So I got out."

He later found he came just a few feet from 50-year-old Theresa Meloy.

When firefighters arrived, they found Meloy was unresponsive in a back bedroom.  She was transported to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Three dogs were also killed in the fire.  Firefighters say there were no working smoke detectors.

John was treated for smoke inhalation.

Devastated family members were at the home Wednesday. Neighbors said Meloy worked at Ford for years and recently finished getting a degree in social work. Meloy hoped to work with the elderly.

"We couldn't believe it when they brought her out," said Gloria Silvers, a neighbor. "She was just delightful. I can't believe we're not gonna see her."
