Police are looking for a man who stole a couple of credit cards from a gym and went on a $10,000 shopping spree.
Police are hoping surveillance photos from the thief's shopping spree will lead them to the suspect.
"We get a lot of calls of this happening," Officer Gary Mason with the Overland Park Police Department said.
It's a constant problem for police and for anyone who ever uses lockers at gyms and community centers, but when someone stole several credit cards out of a wallet belonging to an 84-year-old Overland Park, KS, man, it caught everyone's attention.
"He put his belongings and his wallet in the locker and came back later on and making some purchases at a store and realized he was missing his credit cards," Mason said.
It happened at a 24 Hour Fitness near 119th Street and Metcalf Avenue about 8:45 a.m. on Nov. 9. By the time the man called to cancel the cards, the suspect - caught in surveillance photos - already charged more than $10,000 in electronics throughout several businesses to the man's American Express.
"This ranks up there as far as the dollar amount. Anytime you get to several thousand dollars, it's pretty important to us that we find the person doing it," Mason said.
The victim left his gym locker unlocked, making it easy for the thief. It's something police said happens all too often. Whether the man took advantage of the situation or went in looking to lift someone's stuff, police don't know.
For the victim, it's a lesson learned the hard way.
"It's definitely upsetting for anybody, it's kind of a personal attack and I think he thought he was doing OK and was in a trusted environment where he didn't think anybody would take it, but it's the people who come in who aren't using the facilities that are looking for that type of thing," Mason said.
Anyone with information on this person's identity is asked to contact the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS or the Overland Park Police at 913-344-8729.
