Two slain Topeka officers laid to rest

TOPEKA, KS (KCTV) -

About 2,500 people, including law enforcement officers from around the country, attended the memorial services for two Topeka police officers killed last Sunday in the line of duty.

Attorney General Derek Schmidt spoke about the sacrifices the officers made for the safety and protection of their community.

"Surely what is written is true," the attorney general said. "Greater love hath no man than this that he would lay down his life for his friends."

Services for 50-year-old Cpl. David Gogian, an 8-year police veteran, were held Saturday morning at the Kansas Expocentre's Landon Arena. A service was held several hours later for 29-year-old Officer Jeff Atherly.

Chopper5 was over the scene of the funeral procession after David Gogian's service. His son, Brandon Gogian, also a Topeka officer, was overcome with emotions while speaking during the service.

"Dad was not a hero because he was murdered," he said. "Dad was a hero because of the way he lived."

He asked those in attendance to ensure his father's sacrifice meant something more than just a loss for his family. He talked about how his father once saved a woman from drowning while lightning was striking all around him.

"I implore all of you, law enforcement and civilians, to live your lives bravely and to seek justice for those who have met evil," Brandon Gogian said.

David Gogian and Atherly were killed Sunday while they responded to a call in a grocery store parking lot. A man suspected in the officers' deaths, 22-year-old David E. Tiscareno, was killed by authorities during a standoff early Monday.
