SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -
Scottsdale police have reopened a middle school campus after a search for a reported armed man turned up no suspects Wednesday morning.
Police had closed the Cocopah Middle School campus after a cafeteria worker called police about 6 a.m. and said a man with a holstered pistol, long trench coat and long hair was seen walking by the cafeteria, according to Sgt. Mark Clark of the Scottsdale Police Department.
The report came to police before the start of classes at Cocopah Middle School at 6615 E. Cholla St. The campus, which is adjacent to Chaparral High School, was secured for the search.
Students were already set up for an 11:20 a.m. early release from school and were bused from nearby Chaparral High School back to the middle school after police gave the all-clear just before 10:30 a.m.
A Scottsdale Unified School District spokesperson said students were going to be released from school and to their parents at 11:20 a.m.
Clark said no students were at the school when the report was called in. Several construction workers were also nearby and officers were also talking with them, Clark said.
"Everyone's on edge," Clark said in reference to last week's shooting at a Connecticut Elementary School in which 20 students were killed by a man with an assortment of guns, including an assault rifle.
"Everyone's worried about school safety and campus security," Clark continued.
He said Scottsdale police were very cognizant of that fact, and that "it's a sad reflection of the times we live in," but that everyone was exercising an abundance of caution. He said a school about a half-mile from Cocopah was locked down.
Parents hearing about this incident were asked to avoid the Cocopah area and drop off their children at the Chaparral High School Auditorium on the north side of the campus. This is where all kids will end up, Clark said.
Search teams were on the scene from about 6 a.m. and Clark said officers hoped to have the campus reopened by 10:30 a.m.
