Cargill expansion will help Saline County economy

Posted: Updated:

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon and Marshall leaders cheered as an international food and agricultural company is expanding its Saline County facility.

Cargill announced a $15.8 million expansion that will add 50 jobs. The company is expanding its case-ready meat facility with a new production line.

Company officials said they are excited.

"This is an excellent example of public-private collaboration that generates the type of investment to expand business, add jobs and grow the state's economy," Jody Horner, a top leader for Cargill. "This is a wonderful day for the state of Missouri, the Marshall community and Cargill."

Cargill makes at its Marshall location ready-to-cook beef, pork and chicken items to be sold in grocery stores and other retail outlets.

Nixon said tax incentives offered by the state were key to secure the investment.

"This is a win for the local economy and a win for the state of Missouri," Nixon said. "They could have literally spent $15.8 million in America...  It doesn't happen by accident and it plays off all our of successes now and into the future."

Residents say 50 additional jobs will make a huge economic difference in a small town like Marshall.

The plant employs 455.
