EASLEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -
School district officials said an Easley High School student was arrested Monday after weapons were found in a car, but there was no intended threat to the school.
John Eby, spokesman for the School District of Pickens County, said a student saw weapons and ammunition in another student's car on campus and reported it to a teacher. Upon searching the student's car, Eby said they did find a gun, at least one knife and ammo inside.
The student was arrested and will be recommended for expulsion for at least 365 days, according to district policy, Eby said. He said while the guns were left in the car after they believe they were used for hunting and recreation, officials do not believe the student intended to harm anyone.
"The timing of this incident is extremely unfortunate, but there is no indication that there was ever an intended threat to the school," Eby said in press release regarding the student's arrest. "We commend the student who came forward with the information and the staff members who responded quickly to ensure the safety of Easley High."
Eby said having weapons on campus violates state law and the district has a zero-tolerance policy about weapons on campus.
Easley police said they found a loaded .22 caliber handgun along with two axes, a pair of handcuffs, a stun gun, a razor blade knife, nine knives of various sizes and more than 200 rounds of assorted ammunition in the car of 17-year-old Hunter Green. Police arrested Green and charged him as an adult with possession of firearm on school property.
Eby said Tuesday that the school's response was not impacted by the potential of a threat because the appropriate steps were taken to ensure students' safety no matter Green's intentions.
Law enforcement told Eby they do not think Grene intended to threaten the school.
"The fact that the large majority of the ammunition could not be used with the gun in the car leads us to believe that it was not intended for use at the school or as part of a planned attack," Eby said. "There is no indication that the student ever removed the weapons from his car at the school."
Eby said he was told that student was known to be a frequent hunter, with much of what was found in the car commonly used as hunting gear.
