LAWRENCE, KS (KCTV) -
Seeing a police officer at your front door might be alarming enough, but imagine opening the door to find a man in a ski mask with a gun.
Police said the shots rang out at 12th and New Jersey streets. They didn't say which house was targeted, but neighbors are on edge.
Police said it all began just after midnight Thursday morning. They said two men knocked on a door on the block pretending to be police. A person inside opened the door just enough to spot someone wearing a ski mask and holding a rifle.
The homeowner slammed the door and called 911 as the two police impersonators ran off.
But the story doesn't end there. Police said one of the suspects was shot in the arm during the encounter.
Investigators said the pair then went to their home near 8th and Mississippi streets and called police claiming they had been robbed and shot – all as a way to explain the gunshot wound.
"It makes me feel slightly unsafe in this neighborhood, a little bit," said Monica Melhem, who lives on the street where the attempted robbery took place.
She said she'll now think twice before answering her door.
"Yeah it makes me a little more nervous. I will probably look out the window a lot and call people before I answer the door if it was weird," Melhem said.
She said the street in front of her house is too dark and it makes her uncomfortable at night. She'd like to see the city install more street lights.
Melhem wasn't the only one who seemed a bit more nervous. Someone called the police on KCTV5 reporter Stephen Mayer while he was shooting video of the area – they were worried that his car seemed suspicious.
The first suspect has already been booked into the Douglas County Jail. Police said they plan to arrest the second man once he's released from the hospital.
