OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

Speeders and other traffic violators were targeted Thursday by Overland Park Police Department's traffic safety unit.

The officers targeted eight areas known for a high number of crashes, including fatalities, and other traffic issues.

"We are monitoring speeds, following too closely, a lot of moving violations like unsafe lane changes," Officer Michelle Koos said.

The goal is to reduce wrecks by increasing officer visibility, enforcement and driver awareness.

Koos said the goal is to get people's attention, "Because it's the time of the year when people sometimes get a little frustrated. They have a lot of stress on their minds that they are dealing with."

Of course, some motorists were unhappy and felt that police had better things to deal with. but Koos said she believes officers made a positive impact with most drivers.

"I think we made an impact and that's the goal," she said.

The department didn't release totals on the number of tickets issued and arrests made.
