Detectives are investigating a string of nail salon burglaries, and police are asking for help in tracking down those responsible.
Authorities said there have been a total of 17 break-ins in the metro in the last three weeks The thief is using a rock or other heavy object to smash in windows and doors. The salons have been in Kansas City and Raytown.
Police released a photo of a suspect from one reported burglary at Soho Nails Spa, located at 203 Northeast Englewood Road, in the Northland. This salon was hit about 1 a.m. on Nov. 20.
Owner Alex Nquyen hopes the suspect, who is apparently looking for money, is caught soon. The suspect got just $30 but left a big expensive mess to clean up.
"It took about $500 to fix the door and to replace the register," Nguyen said.
Police are asking salons to polish up on their security measures until the suspect is caught. This includes not having a lot of money on hand or leaving a significant sum in a register overnight.
Nquyen said salons traditionally don't have a lot of money so the suspect is going to a lot of trouble for little gain.
"I think he's crazy," he said. ""He can't get a lot. It's just a lot of trouble and hassle for us."
Because of his troubles, he has installed a security alarm at his salon in an effort to alert police quickly to a break in.
If anyone knows anything about the rash of break-ins or can identify the suspect, they are urged to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
