MIDDLETOWN, CT (WFSB) -

Two men were arrested by the Middletown Police Department at a motel Wednesday night, accused of trying to sell crack-cocaine to uncover officers that was really deodorant.

According to police, they were contacted by a resident who received a note that told them to call a provided number if they needed "party supplies." The resident told police he believed it was a message to see if people were interested in purchasing drugs.

Police sent a text message to the provided number and requested to purchase an eight ball of crack-cocaine, which is 3.5 grams, for $150.

Police said Robert Griffin, 37, agreed to meet them at the Wesleyan Inn Suites on Washington Street.

Griffin, who is homeless, entered the motel around 6 p.m. and went to a room where surveillance was set up by police. He was confronted by officers and told to get on the ground.

At that time, he threw a plastic baggie with a white substance to the floor.

Griffin was arrested and charged with conspiracy to misrepresentation of substance as controlled substance and conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny. He is being held on a $5,000 bond and is expected to be arraigned in Middlesex Superior Court on Dec. 21.

When asked what he would do if the buyer realized the substance was not crack-cocaine, Griffin told investigators that he would run away but make sure to get the money first.

Griffin was dropped by Matthew Miramant, 32, of Middletown. Police had Griffin call Miramant, who was uncooperative with officers during his arrest.

Police said Griffin admitted to being at the motel to sell crack-cocaine and putting notes on occupants' doors at the Wesleyan Inn Suites.

Police seized heroin and two samurai swords from the vehicle. Miramant could not explain to police why he had the weapons in the vehicle.

Miramant was charged with misrepresentation of substance as controlled substance, conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny, possession of narcotic substance, possession of weapons in a motor vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.
