A distraught state employee threatened to commit suicide inside a Kansas City parole office, Kansas City Police Department Officer Darin Snapp said Thursday.
After about an hour of negotiations, the probation officer put down his gun and gave himself up to police. Shortly after that, employees and visitors were allowed back into the building.
The man apparently fired a shot, but apparently did not hit himself with the gunfire. The bullet pierced his door, and his co-workers and others in the building ran outside in fear.
The man's office was in the center of the building and had no windows. While the man locked himself inside his office, he talked to police and co-workers via telephone and indicated that he had personal problems, Snapp said.
Police said they did not believe anyone else was in danger during the situation.
This began unfolding Thursday morning. Police initially said a person had been shot, but later clarified this after gathering more information at the scene.
Police were called about 11:30 a.m. to Missouri Department of Corrections' Probation and Parole Office located at 1330 Brush Creek Parkway.
Police had shut down streets surrounding the parole office.
