WELLFORD, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An Upstate man is out of jail after police said he got caught driving his lawnmower on a busy highway in Wellford - while intoxicated.

Investigators said Robert Conrad III, 56, was arrested late Monday evening.

The police report states Conrad was weaving in and out of traffic on Highway 29, where the speed limit is 50 mph. The arresting officer said Conrad smelled like alcohol and had slurred speech.

It's an incident that his neighbors aren't shocked about. FOX Carolina tried to contact Conrad by phone, but both numbers listed for him were disconnected. He also had a private property sign in his yard that kept us from knocking on his door.

Investigators are just thankful no one was hurt.

"The speed limit on Highway 29 is 50 mph, and cars are running that and then run up on something going three to five miles," said Wellford police Chief Jeff Bowers. "It could have actually been worse than what it was."

Investigators said Conrad was coming from the Startex area back to his home on Greenville Highway. It's a trip investigators believe was anywhere from three to five miles before he was stopped by police.

Conrad was charged with driving under the influence. He is expected to be back in court sometime in mid-January.
