Woman, 79, fights off attack at Leawood home

Posted: Updated:

An elderly Leawood woman was slightly injured when a man snatched her purse while she was at her home.

Officers were dispatched to the 12800 block of Cambridge Road to investigate a strong armed robbery that occurred about noon Monday.

A man had walked into the 79-year-old woman's garage after she pulled into her garage and got out of her car. The man snatched the woman's purse and sprinted to his car.

She tried to pursue him, but fell to the ground. Thankfully, she will recover.

Officers pursued the fleeing man. He backed his vehicle into a police car at 106th and Oak streets in Kansas City, but officers were able to capture him. The man is in jail awaiting charges.

Residents said Leawood police do a wonderful job of patrolling the area. The victim lives in a maintenance-provided community that is geared toward seniors.

"I've always felt real secure here," one resident said. "Everybody probably is a senior who lives in the area."

The neighbor said that feeling of security has been shattered even though an arrest was made.

"I will be real careful when I come home," she said. "There could be another one out there too."

She urged other seniors to be cautious too.
