Kansas City's chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters is holding their annual benefit auction Friday night, but it's a different style of auction.
The Sexy Singles Auction benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City and this year, one of the singles participating in the auction is a former little who had a big brother mentor him years ago.
For years Daniel Barickman wondered how he could help the organization that helped him.
His mom reached out to the local chapter after his parents separated. He was paired up with his big brother, John.
"It was a great fit and from (ages) 8 to 10, John was my big brother and was a huge impact in my life," Barickman said.
Although it's been more than 25 years since he saw John, Barickman said he'll never forget the times they spent together.
"We would go out, we did the Halloween Big Brothers Big Sisters event, we would go to the Royals games, we would just go shoot basketball, we would go to the park - things that seemed small but, to me, was really important, really huge," Barickman said.
Barickman said the experiences came at a time when he needed it the most. He said all he wanted was someone to talk to about what was going on in his life at home.
"I always look back to 25 years ago when John was around and it really was an important time in my life," he said.
Today Barickman has come full circle. The last few months he's worked to raise money and awareness for Big Brothers Big Sisters and Friday night, he says he'll be paying it back.
"It's definitely emotional. It's definitely full-circle because it's like this event completes what I've done all my life and what I've been through and nothing has really hit home as much as being a part of this so it's really awesome. It's a really good feeling," he said. "It's finally a chance for me to give back to the organization. And I've been searching for a way for so many years and this opportunity is awesome. The whole organization is amazing. The people who are helping run it are amazing. I've put a lot of time into this and I'm really hoping tonight the event goes well and we raise a lot of money for Big Brothers Big Sisters."
The number of kids ranging in age from 8 to 14 waiting for a mentor in Kansas City has reached 500.
There are still tickets available to Friday night's auction at Harrah's Voodoo Lounge. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at the door.
All proceeds benefit the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City.
