UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

An intoxicated man and his roommate paid a visit to a Union water company to complain about their bill and one of the men tried to hit a worker, according to deputies.

Union County deputies said the man, identified as 50-year-old John Bond, went with his roommate to the Browns Creek Water Company on Lockhart Highway about 11 a.m. to complain about a bill they thought was too high.

Deputies said Bond cursed at a female worker, and when the manager, Jimmy Teaster, came out, Bond tried to hit him, but Teaster hit Bond in the face first.

"I asked him to leave the property and not to come back, that's when he got belligerent and accosted me," said Teaster.

After he was hit, Bond drove off, leaving behind his roommate and nearly running another driver off the road, according to the deputy's report.

Deputies said they found Bond about 10 minutes later at home and he told them he drove there after leaving the water company. Bond told deputies that he had been assaulted by the worker and that he did not try to hit him, but witnesses told deputies the worker was defending himself from Bond.

"The fellow that [Bond] brought down there made the comment that he'd been drunk since Sunday," said Teaster.

Bond was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, public disorderly conduct and third-degree assault and battery. Deputies said a breath test showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.33.
