Dog fighting is a quiet sport – dogs are not loud when they fight. So spotting the signs can be a little more difficult.
- "Dog pulling" is a sport where dogs compete to pull the most amount of weight behind them. It is legal, but ASPCA said it's often a cover up for dog fighting rings.
- Displayed trophies for dog pulling - dog fighters often display trophy cases for legal sports like dog pulling. It's often a cover for dog fighting rings. ASPCA said they've documented dog fighters buying fake trophies to display at home.
- "Web of cruelty" - domestic abuse and child abuse often go hand in hand with animal cruelty. HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) reports 71 percent of domestic violence victims say their abuser also targeted their animal.
But officials remind everybody that dog fighting is a crime and people should call police if they suspect it's going on.
