Johnson County Christmas Bureau seeks new, used coats

OLATHE, KS (KCTV) -

A special store is opening Friday where families in need can shop for free this holiday season, and the need for donations is even greater than last year.

The Johnson County Christmas Bureau's annual Holiday Shop is asking for the community's help for new or gently used coats.

Last year, their coat racks looked pretty pathetic a few days into their opening, but thanks to the generosity within the area, coats came in by the armload.

The Holiday Shop currently has 5,000 coats, but they are in need of 8,000 more.

The agency provides holiday assistance to low-income residents of Johnson County during the nine-day event. A family of four can leave with more than $300 worth of items of their choosing.

Pre-qualified clients, by appointment, select groceries, personal care and household supplies, children's clothing, hats, gloves, scarves, coats, toys, gifts and books.

The Johnson County Christmas Bureau brightens the holidays for more than 13,000 people representing 3,600 families and hundreds of nursing home residents.

About 3,000 volunteers also donate their time.

Locations for drop-off:

JCCB Holiday Shop
Former Steve & Barry's at The Great Mall of the Great Plains (south end of the mall)
20050 W. 151st St.
Olathe, KS

There are also barrels placed throughout Johnson County, a list can be found at http://jccb.org.
