KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

Firefighters are trying to determine what started a fire that caused the roof of a KCK home to collapse early Sunday morning.

Flames licked toward the sky as smoke billowed from the attic of a two-story home in the 4600 block of Metropolitan Avenue.

Authorities said smoke detectors alerted the homeowner and child inside the home about 12:30 a.m. and were able to safely escape the fire without injury.

Crews were informed by the homeowner that hunting ammunition was stored in an upstairs rear bedroom.

Firefighters attacked fire but had to evacuate the structure when roof started to collapse.  The fire then had to be fought in defensive mode.

Deputy Chief Craig Duke, a spokesman for the Kansas City, KS, Fire Department, said the damage caused by the fire was estimated at $55,000.

The Red Cross was also called to help the family.
