OAK GROVE, MO (KCTV) -

A community is mourning the loss of a teenager killed in a head-on collision.

Joseph Scott, 17, died Friday on Mecklin School Road near Truman Road. Scott was a junior at Oak Grove High School.

Sheriff's deputies were called about 3:45 p.m. regarding the crash just north of Oak Grove in unincorporated Jackson County.

When deputies arrived, they were contacted by one of the drivers, a 46-year-old Buckner, MO, man involved in the deadly crash. He said he was heading north on Mecklin School Road, began to crest a hill and noticed a red Pontiac Grand Am in his lane of travel.

The man told deputies that he attempted to avoid the crash but collided with Scott's car. First responders said Scott died at the scene.

The other driver was checked out at an area hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Both were believed to be wearing their seat belts.

Friends of Scott say they still can't believe he is gone. Those close to Scott say he was a caring person and had a smile that would brighten up anyone's day. Classmates say he was a member on the school's track team.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and the Independence Police Department.
