Family decides to move from violence after son, 2, shot

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A toddler is back at home after being hit by a bullet, but not for long. His family is packing Sunday to move out because they are fed up with the violence in their neighborhood.

Axel Orozco has been through something no child should ever experience. Scars on the 2-year-old's body are a constant reminder of a bullet that pierced his spleen and liver.

However, Axel is back at being a regular little boy who loves to play with Big Wheels and super heroes. His favorite toy is Spiderman.

"They had to open his belly so they could fix his stomach," Axel's mom, Anna Orozco, said.

Nearly a dozen bullets were fired at his Kansas City home at 16th Street and Topping Avenue on Nov. 9.  Axel was standing in front of the TV when the bullet struck him in the back.

His family says they are living scared, not knowing what will happen next, so they have decided to pack up and leave.

Police believe the shooting was gang related. A 14-year-old boy was arrested and charged with the attack.

Anna Orozco said her older boys and her daughter are on the honor roll and are not in a gang. But this summer, she said her daughter broke up a fight involving the 14-year-old suspect.

After that incident, her house was shot up last August, and the family has noticed other growing signs of gangs on the block.

"We hear shootings like every two or three times a week ... gunshots," she said.

They had planned on moving out after the first shooting this summer. But after realizing Axel's bright smile was almost taken from them forever, they aren't taking any more chances.

"(We are) leaving for safety. That's what parents do. Look for something safe for your children," she said.

The Orozcos hope to be in their new home by Monday. In the meantime, the 14-year-old suspect is expected back in court Nov. 28.
