Man in Northland dirt bike accident died doing what he loved

Posted: Updated:

A fun ride on a dirt bike turned tragic for a Jackson County man.

Brian Flores, 32, was killed just before 5 p.m. Thursday when an SUV ran into his bike at North Winchester Avenue and Northeast 50th Street in the Northland.

He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a hospital, police said. Flores was wearing a helmet.

Police markings are still left at the scene, mapping out the wreck as 100 friends and family gathered to honor the life of a man who, they say, died doing what he loved.

His family is still struggling with the fact that he is gone, considering he was lighting up the room for Thanksgiving dinner.

"He said, 'Lord, the food smells so good. I hope it tastes good.' He always had to have a joke and everyone laughed," Flores' mother, Donna Flores, said.

Witnesses say Flores was riding a friend's dirt bike when a woman ran a stop sign and plowed into him.

"It is pretty hard to go to sleep at night seeing that," said Daniel Mann who owned the bike Flores was riding.

Mann witnessed the wreck firsthand. He came out to support the family Friday night and perhaps seek emotional support for himself as well.

"I live right across the street. It's hard to come out of my house because it replays every time I see it," Mann said.

Flores' family knows it will be a very difficult several months as they cope with his death, but they say having the support of the community helps provide the strength they'll need.

"Thank you everybody for supporting us. It is going to be hard. Brian is up there watching us," Donna Flores said.

Police are still investigating the crash. There is no word on whether that second driver faces any charges.

A memorial fund has been established to help the family with funeral expenses. If anyone would like to donate, they can do so in person or by mailing a check to:
