Deals, peer pressure draw shoppers to Black Friday

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The days of stores throwing open their doors in the pre-dawn hours on Black Friday has turned into throngs shopping Thanksgiving night.

Overland Park Walmart manager Mike Stallings said Walmart will have deals starting at 8 p.m. Thursday, 10 p.m. Thursday and then again 5 a.m. Friday.

Stallings said customer demand is fueling the addition of shopping hours on Thanksgiving Day.

"We found it to be successful," he said. "A lot of customers in that don't want to necessarily be shopping overnight."

Target, Sears and Walmart are among the big box retailers joining K-Mart in the Thursday shopping mania. The hope for some retailers is to avoid customers getting trampled and hurt in the mad dash when doors open.

Some shoppers are already camped out in front of stores like Best Buy.

Kansas City psychologist Marilyn Metzl said Thanksgiving more and more isn't about celebrating a wonderful national traditional with your family and friends. She said it has become about material things.

"Get out there and shop," she said.

She said the desire to save money in a tight economy, the panicked desire to get limited items and peer pressure to join the masses motivates shoppers to shirk the family for deals.

"The hunt! They will hunt for what they really want," Metzl said. "Others like being part of the mob. Why do they gather in New York to watch a ball fall down. They like being part of the action. Black Friday is hyped enough so they want to be part of the action."

Retailers have done their research. They strategically place items and signs throughout the store in hopes of pushing you to add more items to your shopping cart. The hope is door-busting sell items will cost them money but they gain overall by customers buying other items.

Metzl advises if you go to know what you want, be aware of your budget and stick to it.
