Possibly armed man prompts multiple school lockdown in Liberty

Posted: Updated:

Four Northland schools and the district offices are on a heightened alert after a report of a suspicious man possibly carrying a rifle.

Police were called about 10 a.m. Thursday to Liberty High School, located at 200 Blue Jay Dr., in regards to suspicious person.

The Liberty School District said a witness reported to the district's administration that the man was seen near the south property line of high school.

State and local police were then notified and secured the perimeters of the building.

The witness reported that the man was dressed in dark clothing and was carrying a weapon.

Buildings in the district within closest proximity were placed on a Level 1 lockdown, the district said.

A Level 1 lockdown means that all exterior doors were locked while normal building activities continued inside the building as normal.

Other schools include Liberty Academy, Alexander Doniphan Elementary, Liberty Middle School and the District Administration Center.

Officials said after investigating the report, district security and law enforcement officials found no threat in the area.

However, the schools will remain on heightened alert the remainder of the day, the district said.

"Safety is the top priority of Liberty Public Schools, and we want to ensure you that all students are safe," said Dallas Ackerman, director of communications for the school district.
