Fight over back rent at storage locker leads to police standoff

Posted: Updated:

A man is now in police custody after a standoff ended Thursday morning.

Police said the standoff at a storage locker facility stemmed from an argument over unpaid rent.

Officers were called about 8:45 a.m. to the 5600 block of East 112th Terrace on a possible prowler at the storage facility.

The standoff was initiated about 9:15 a.m.

Police said the renter of a storage locker had come to get items from his locker when the owner confronted him over unpaid rent. The owner refused to let the man into his locker until he paid up. A heated argument ensued and the owner called police. The renter barricaded himself inside the locker.

Police tried to get the man to come out and that's when he told them they would "be sorry if they lifted the door." This statement sparked the standoff.

Police eventually persuaded him to give himself up just before 11 a.m. Police confiscated a rifle-style BB gun.

"This ended the way we wanted it to but, it could have definitely (ended badly) if he had made any movements while he was standing in the back - we don't actually know if he was holding that BB gun at the time - but he was making threats that he was holding something and that officers would be sorry if they came in," Darin Snapp with the Kansas City, MO, Police Department said.

Police took the man into custody and said they were happy the man decided not to point it at them because they would not have known the weapon was not a real gun.
