The man suspected of fatally shooting a University of Kansas Hospital employee outside his office building killed himself, authorities said.
The two men were brothers. Police identified the victim as Todd A. Pruitt, 51, of Shawnee. His older brother, Robert Pruitt, 58, of Merriam, fatally shot his younger brother before turning the gun on himself.
About noon Thursday, police found the suspected shooter's body in a wooded area off 107th Street and Blue River Road in Kansas City. "Pings" from the man's cellphone led them to the body, police said.
The shooting happened at 7:15 a.m. Thursday in the 5700 block of Broadmoor Street, which is just east of Metcalf Avenue and north of Johnson Drive.
Todd Pruitt was rushed to KU Hospital where he died shortly before 8:30 a.m.
Several businesses are housed inside the building, including the hospital, which has several floors dedicated to IT, medical records and call center workers.
Bob Hallinan, spokesman for The University of Kansas Hospital, said Todd Pruitt began work in June at KU Hospital as an IT employee.
"Our thoughts are with his family and friends," Hallinan said.
Co-workers said Todd Pruitt had a fabulous sense of humor and was a great team player who produced quality work.
The hospital is providing support to its approximately 250 employees at the Broadmoor building. The hospital is also evaluating its security policies in conjunction with police and plans upgrades.
Witnesses told police they saw an altercation between two men in the parking lot. They said the other man shot the victim multiple times.
Robert Pruitt left the scene heading north on Broadmoor Street in a medium-blue colored Ford Fiesta hatchback car with a Illinois license plate.
Authorities said the vehicle is a rental car that had been reported stolen.
Police aren't saying what sparked the altercation.
Devastated neighbors said Todd Pruitt was the ultimate family man. He is survived by his wife, his son and a little girl the family recently adopted from China.
Anyone with information was urged to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS or the Mission Police Department at 913-722-0697.
