KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Police said they've arrested a 14-year-old boy Tuesday in connection with a shooting that seriously wounded a 2-year-old boy.

Investigators arrested the teen Tuesday morning near 23rd Street and Oakley Avenue, where he was taken to the juvenile detention center.

"He wants food, he wants water. He's asking for water, that's a good sign, and he's doing pretty good," Ana Orozco, the victim's mother, said.

Often in times of crisis, it's the simple things people miss the most and Axel Vega Orozco is no exception. Video of him just a few days after he was shot shows him at the hospital with tubes attached to his arms and face playing with toys. He's too young to understand why he can't have solid food and probably too young to understand the panic his shooting caused, but his mom remembers it well.

"I couldn't even drive my truck. I stopped and started praying to the Lord for the best. I wanted to see my baby, you know," Ana Orozco said.

Axel was shot in the back Friday, the bullet piercing his stomach, liver and spleen as he sat in the living room of his home at 16th Street and Topping Avenue watching a movie. The entry hole in the wall from the bullet is still clearly visible.

Tuesday morning, Axel's family received word that a 14-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the shooting and may have been involved in another shooting of the home in August.

"That's my only question - why? I need answers, I need to know why," Ana Orozco said.

Now that her son is on the mend, Ana Orozco is making plans to leave the neighborhood.

"I really need a house for me and my kids for them to be safe," she said.

She said she was in the process of searching for a house when the tragedy happened.
