Ft. Riley soldier killed by enemy forces in Afghanistan

FORT RILEY, KS (KCTV) -

A 37-year-old Fort Riley soldier was killed last Friday in eastern Afghanistan.

Capt. James D. Nehl, 37, of Gardiner, OR, died in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan, when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.

He was an infantry officer assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.

Nehl joined the Army in 2007 and arrived at Fort Riley in May.

This was his first deployment to Afghanistan. He also previously deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
