Police are searching for the man who attempted to kidnap a 13-year-old girl waiting for her school bus Monday morning.
Authorities said the masked man grabbed the Lakeview Middle School seventh-grader about 6:40 a.m. and tried to drag her into the nearby woods.
Fortunately, a person driving by saw the attack and stopped to yell at the man, who ran back into the woods. Witnesses then called police.
Later, the man, who was no longer wearing his ski mask, came out of the woods near the apartment. He was suspicious enough that he was confronted by a dog walker and took off again.
"She was panicking, crying, telling me she almost got kidnapped," the girl's mother, Christina McCleary, told KCTV5. "A man got behind her and covered her mouth and tried to drag her into the woods."
Riverside police rushed to the El Chapparel Apartments, located at Gateway Street and Mandan Road, to investigate.
At about 8:40 a.m., two Riverside officers along with Platte County deputies re-entered the wooded area, canvassing for clues.
McCleary said she is incredibly proud of her daughter.
"A lot of kids at 13 wouldn't fight," she said. "She fought, drew attention and got out of the situation."
She also said her daughter won't be waiting at the bus stop alone anymore.
"She's going to be scared until this guy is found," she said.
Meanwhile, she and other parents are thankful people were there to help save this girl from a worse situation.
"That is exactly what needs to be done when it happens like that. Even if you don't know the child, you know something is not right. And you just go with that feeling," parent Michele Poirier said.
The Park Hill School District also sent out a release informing parents of the attempted abduction. This is the fourth stranger-danger alert this school year.
No arrest has been made in a similar attack in Liberty last month. Click here to read about this.
Authorities describe the man in the Riverside case as Hispanic, in his 30s, 5'8" tall and 150 pounds with a thin goatee. He also had dark hair, dark eyes and wore a black hoodie with either yellow stripes or colored stripes on the back and jeans.
The jacket apparently had a stripe running horizontal, separating the light color from the dark color. The suspect was also wearing light-colored jeans.
Police on Wednesday released a sketch of the jacket.
If anyone knows anything about the attempted abduction, they are urged to call the Riverside Police Department at 816-741-1191.
