Area’s first taste of winter weather reported north of KC

Posted: Updated:

Light snowfall has been reported in St. Joseph, as sleet falls across the metro Sunday.

KCTV5 chief meteorologist Chris Suchan said a large zone of widespread rain and early thunder developed overnight Saturday into Sunday morning across the region.

"It will gradually move east out of the area. Colder air will continue to filter in and quite possibly creating a narrow window for light sleet or snow to mix with the rain before it all ends," Suchan said.

Suchan said while it may not be a big issue across the area, this is certainly the first wintry-weather in the area as we work toward winter.

Saturday was the last gorgeous day of warm temperatures and gusty winds from the south.

"Heading into Sunday, this is where we see some major changes unfold as a strong autumn cold front slides across just after sunrise with a sharp drop in temperatures," he said.

Suchan said the rain with a light mix will gradually move east out of the area as colder air continues to filter in.

Storm totals for the blustery rain should run around .75″ to 2″, a very beneficial rain as drought conditions persist across the area.
