Kansas City neighbors on high alert after string of home break-ins

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The area of 97th and Mercier streets is seeing a recent string of break-ins and neighbors are on high alert.

There were at least six burglaries or attempted burglaries to happen in and around the Lea Manor neighborhood and it's now the source a concern for residents and the subject of a neighborhood newsletter being circulated warning residents of the alarming trend.

"I was working in my back office and I heard my doorbell ringing over and over and over again and I thought, ‘that's odd,'" Cher Congour said.

Congour didn't need a bulletin to tip her off about the recent neighborhood burglaries. She was home when thieves tried to break into her house. After the doorbell stopped ringing, Congour heard a kick.

"(Then) I heard the storm door open and next thing I know there's a loud thud like someone had kicked my front door," she said. "I screamed, grabbed my cell phone, ran to the bedroom and literally hid as I called 911."

Congour believes the frequent doorbell ringing was a means for the burglars to figure out if she was home.

According to the Homeowners Association, the area that burglars hit between Oct. 25 and Nov. 2 is mainly confined to the neighborhood between State Line and Holmes roads and 103rd Street and Bannister Road. The group has notified neighbors who are now on heightened alert.

"We need to be on the lockout for one another. We need to start paying attention to the cars, start talking to your neighbors," Congour said.

Police ask that anyone with information about the burglaries call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
