Boy, 2, critically injured in apparent random shooting in Kansas City

Posted: Updated:

A 2-year-old boy is in critical condition after someone fired shots into his Kansas City home, police said Friday morning.

The shooting was reported at 10:33 a.m. Friday at 16th Street and Topping Avenue. The child was alert and conscious when rushed from the scene via ambulance. Axel Vega Orozco is in critical but stable condition after he was shot in the back while watching a movie inside his living room.

Police initially said the shooting was an apparent drive-by shooting but are considering the shooter may have been on foot.

Two adults and three children were inside the home at the time of the shooting. Police are looking into whether the shooting was gang related.

Armando Orozco, the victim's 13-year-old brother, said his uncle called 911 after the bullet burst through the house and hit his brother.

"I just heard gunshots and I came downstairs," Armando said. "He (the uncle) carried the baby. He saw blood on his hands and he checked the baby's back and he saw blood."

Police Sgt. Marisa Barnes said police have not identified any suspects and ask for the public's help.

If you have any information to help identify the shooter, call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
