EMPORIA, KS (KCTV/AP) -

A missing Kansas college student has been found in Germany nearly three weeks after traveling there without telling her friends or family.

Twenty-year-old Emilee Irsik, a junior at Emporia State University, was with German authorities when she called her family about noon Thursday. Her mother, Sherry Irsik, of La Grange, NC, said she is "thrilled beyond measure" and looking forward to being reunited with her daughter.

But she said she didn't speak long with her daughter and had "zero information" about what happened.

Emilee Irsik had been studying German at Emporia State. She left Oct. 19 during the school's fall break and landed the next day in Hamburg.

Her roommates notified the school when Emilee Irsik didn't show up for classes Oct. 22.

German media reported that Emilee Irsik was found at Hamburg Airport.  She appeared at the desk of British Airways in order to buy a plane ticket to the United States.

The employee at the counter realized that it was the missing American student, and she then informed the federal police, international media reported.

"We are incredibly grateful for everyone that has joined in this effort. To everyone that has hung a flier, made a phone call, written a story or just said a prayer, our gratitude has no words," Meggin Finkeldei posted on a Facebook page to help find Emilee Irsik.

Turns out Emilee Irsik had been on a whirlwind of the country, going from Hamburg to Cologne, Berlin, Munich, Rostock and Sassnitz. It hasn't been reported if she even knew she was reported missing.

Emilee Irsik's aunt, Jan Jones, lives in Lake Winnebago, MO.

"We had people reaching out from Germany to help us, really complete strangers offering to help any way that they could and, that way, it kind of restores your faith in people and the goodness of people wanting to help," Jones said. "We kind of swung between being determined to just being depressed and discouraged, but today is a good day to celebrate."

German authorities are arranging transportation back to the United States for Emilee Irsik. It's unknown at this time if she'll come back to Emporia, KS, or if she'll be sent to North Carolina, where her mom lives.
