Burglary cripples car lot after dozens of keys, titles stolen

Posted: Updated:

Four checkbooks and two pistols were swiped from an SUV, but it was something else taken from the vehicle that is crippling a man's business.

It might look like a pretty stocked lot at Fat Boy Motor Company in Independence, but owner Reggie Holzbauer can only sell a handful. The cars aren't lemons. The keys are gone, and the titles too.

"Ninety-percent of them are useless right now. It's just a storage lot," Holzbauer said.

Holzbauer said 48 titles were stolen from the backseat of a Honda Pilot. The keys and titles were in a briefcase.

Surveillance video from the Lunar Bowl in Blue Springs shows six young thieves casing the lot about 8:30 p.m. Monday.

Holzbauer said it looks like they were trying door handles.

When they got to his car, their game of odds paid off because of a malfunctioning lock he wasn't aware of.

Besides the keys, the thief and his buddies also got four checkbooks, a dealer tag and two pistols.

Holzbauer said he is not concerned but more than a little put out.

"Your hands are tied. I mean, I can come to work, but I can't do anything. I have people come onto the lot, they want to look at cars [and] I don't have keys for them," he said.

One car he does have keys for was the one he was driving that night.  And that one, he says, is going right back to auction.

"I'm done with this bad luck vehicle," he said.
