HARRISONVILLE, MO (KCTV) -
Having the right to vote is a big responsibility and one taken very seriously. But few have taken it more seriously than a Harrisonville mother.
At 7 pounds 12 ounces, one-day-old Graham Alexander could care less who won Tuesday's presidential election, but he will forever be linked to it.
"I tried not to scare the poling ladies," Shae Twenter said.
Graham's mom, Shae Twenter, is a teacher, and all year long she's been telling her students the value of voting. So you can imagine her quandary when her water broke on the way to the poling office.
"I looked at my husband and I said, ‘I didn't get an absentee ballot, and it's voting day and I'm not going to be able to vote.' He says, ‘well the poles opened at 6 (a.m.).' (I thought) ‘OK,'" Shae Twenter said.
"I was just the driver and the poling place was on the way to the hospital so we just popped in real quick. We thought we had plenty of time and the doctor didn't seem real concerned yet," Adam Twenter, Shae's husband, said.
While Shae Twenter said a trip to the emergency room was on her mind, having the opportunity to vote in a presidential election doesn't happen very often. And that's a message she hopes her kids will take from this.
"We're an example and I knew that I would be able to tell him (looks at son) it's really important as an American that we exercise the right we have," she said.
And Graham will always have a souvenir of the election.
"I wanted the (I Voted Today) sticker so I could put it in his book so it's sitting in all of our papers right now getting ready to go in his baby book," Shae Twenter said.
Graham is the couple's second son. His name was already chosen and had nothing to do with the election.
