RIVERSIDE, MO (KCTV) -

A man died in a high-speed chase and crash early Thursday morning.

The wreck happened shortly before 1:30 a.m. at the Beverly Lumber Company, located at 2519 Northwest Platte Rd., which is just east of Interstate 635 and north of Highway 9.

Authorities said the man was eluding them and driving at a high rate of speed heading east on Northwest Platte Road when he lost control of his car trying to navigate a curve in the road.

Police say the man's car jumped a curb and knocked down a light pole before hitting two other curbs and then smashing into a building on the company's property. The car was airborne or rolled about 50 yards, police said.

The man was dead at the scene.

Riverside police first spotted the car and initially tried to stop the man for speeding on northbound I-635. Police say the car was going more than 100 mph.

Police began chasing the car and even used stop sticks to try and slow the car down. The driver was able to avoid the stop sticks. The chase went from I-635 to I-29 and then south into Riverside on Gateway Avenue.

Because of the high speeds, and the fact the suspect was heading into a more populated area, police stopped their chase after only three minutes.

However, just shortly after their pursuit ended, police still in the area heard the crash. Police were not actively pursuing the car at the time of the crash.

Authorities are investigating whether alcohol played a part in the incident. The car had not been reported stolen.

Police have yet to release the identity of a man killed.
