A Shawnee woman left her apartment to grab the mail, but didn't lock the door behind her.
When she returned a few minutes later, she returned to find a man carrying out her guitar, jewelry and prescription medicines.
When she confronted him, he smashed her face with his elbow.
Residents of the Pinegate Apartments off 65th and Flint streets say the apartment complex is in a quiet neighborhood with few problems. Residents said dogs often bark, which is why they find what happened about 9 p.m. Sunday so unusual.
The woman, who is in her 50s, said she was too frightened to talk to KCTV5. The woman said she didn't get a good enough look at the man to help develop a composite sketch.
Police said they set up a perimeter and brought out a tracking dog, but were unable to find the suspect.
"Based on what she's alleging, the whole incident is extremely unusual for Shawnee. We just don't have that happen where a residential burglar elbows someone in the face to take their property. Normally you come home and the suspects are long gone," Capt. Dan Tennis said.
