Customers rejoice over falling gas prices

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

There's sticker shock at the gas pumps and, for once, it's a good shock as gas prices are plunging.

At the QuikTrip at 31st Street and Southwest Boulevard, a gallon of unleaded gas is going for $3.19 a gallon, down more than 20 cents in the last week.

The cost of crude oil is just one reason for the decline. A barrel of brent crude, according to KCTV5's reporting partners at The Kansas City Star, is down $8 since September. The decrease in cost means a savings of 20 cents per gallon to consumers.

Experts warn the lower gas prices are only temporary and for consumers to not get used to it. A storm brewing on the East Coast and the closing of refineries in the Midwest could only contribute to yet another rise.

For those looking to save at the pump, AAA.com offers the following cost-saving tips.

  • Check your spark plugs
  • Check the air and fuel filters at least twice a year. Dirty filters increase fuel consumption and can cause poor performance.
  • Check your tires' pressure. Underinflated tires are a safety hazard and can cut fuel economy by as much as 2 percent per pound of pressure below the recommended level.

Experts say regular routine maintenance of your car could lead to savings over time.
