Police: Henry County woman encouraged granddaughter to commit suicide

HENRY COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A Henry County woman has been charged with first degree cruelty to children after police say she encouraged her granddaughter to take her life.
Yvette Lucas, 51, was released from the Henry County Jail without bond Thursday.
Lucas said her granddaughter was staying with her at her McDonough apartment because the 14-year-old got into an argument with her mother.
Police said Sunday, the teen told her grandmother that she had taken an excessive amount of Tylenol and wanted to kill herself. According to a Henry County criminal warrant, Lucas encouraged her granddaughter to take even more Tylenol in an attempt to kill herself.
Police said the 14-year-old went to sleep and the next day, a third party stopped by the home, noticed the girl was not well and called 911.
Lucas denies the charges and claims her granddaughter has mental health issues.
Police said regardless of what happened, Lucas should not have allowed the girl to go to sleep.
"Even if she didn't believe her child, she should have taken the responsible route and at least called paramedics to check the child out. Evidently the child is troubled and knowing that, Lucas should have at least checked the child out. That may have avoided most of the police involvement in the case," said Sgt. Joey Smith with the Henry County Police Department.
Lucas' case is expected to be presented to a Grand Jury before the end of the year.
