Shelter housing victims of abuse and their animals gets donations worldwide

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A local pet shelter continues to draw donations worldwide.

It's been almost six months since the Rose Brooks Center, a domestic violence shelter for women and families opened its pet shelter - the first in the country to allow victims to bring their pets with them.

The story seems to attract donations from all over. Just last week they received donations from a company in Australia.

A spokesperson at the shelter said the center holds eight pets in the kennel and since, it has opened, it remains full.

"Ultimately pets are a member of the family and this eliminates another barrier of safety. Forty percent of women won't leave because they won't leave their pets behind so there's no doubt that this will continue," Marie Dispenza with Rose Brooks said.
