OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -
Police are increasing patrols around Shawnee Mission schools after a middle school student reported being approached by a man in a pickup.
The alleged report happened about 8:10 a.m. last Tuesday when a 12-year old girl was on her way to the bus stop in the 6300 block of West 80th Street in Overland Park.
She was on her way to school at Indian Hills Middle School in Prairie Village, about 3.5 miles from the bus stop, when a man, who appeared to be in his 40s, driving a white flatbed pickup stopped and asked the girl if she needed a ride.
When the girl declined the man asked again, but she said she was sure she didn't need a ride. The man then drove off.
Police say school resource officers have been keeping their eye out for the pickup truck while patrolling near the school, but have not seen the truck.
The man was described as having white hair and wearing glasses.
The Shawnee Mission School District told parents about the alleged incident in a voicemail, informing them to review safety rules and procedures with their child as authorities step-up patrol support in the area.
